The Design Development Engineer will create and improve plastics components for automotive OEM customers while working out of Detroit, Michigan. The Design Development Engineer will usually serve on a project staff, but will also work alongside CAD drafters evaluating and improving their designs. The Design Development Engineer will utilize CAD to develop different plastic engine components in Detroit, Michigan.

- Develop designs of hoses, tubes, and other plastic injection molded parts for automotive engines out of the Detroit, Michigan plant.
- For this job, evaluate, improve, and refine designs of current products to improve efficiency and minimize cost.
- Evaluate the work of CAD drafters, providing coaching and mentoring as necessary for each job.
- Check other Design Development Engineer work as necessary to ensure maximized efficiency.
- Analyze customer specifications and design products to meet job order specifications.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and quality staff to evaluate designs for manufacturability.
- Keep record of all designs and design changes from the Detroit, Michigan plant.
- Partner with quality and manufacturing staff as necessary during Failure Mode Effect Analysis.
- The Design Development Engineer must collaborate with project design staff to improve designs and rectify issues with different job orders.
- Design and redesign products as necessary to ensure customer satisfaction while working in Detroit, Michigan.
- The Design Development Engineer must maintain knowledge of trends and innovations in plastic injection molded engine components through membership in trade organizations, following trade journals and periodicals, attending workshops or classes, and attending trade events.
Design Development Engineer (Detroit Area) Job Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience designing plastic injection molded parts for automotive applications, engine components preferred.
- Exceptional design skills with autoCAD software.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working with design colleagues and evaluating the work of peers and junior staff.
- Comfortable serving as a mentor and advisor for junior personnel.
- Great computer skills. Familiar with Microsoft office (Word, powerpoint, Excel, Outlook). Able to use design databases and design software. Mastercam/Unigraphics experience is a significant plus.
- Previous automotive OEM design experience is a plus.
- Lean Six Sigma training or certification is a significant plus.
- Able to work as part of a team.
