Detroit Product Design Engineer Overview:
The Detroit Product Design Engineer will report to the director of engineering. The Product Design Engineer will plan and develop new products based on customers’ needs and their anticipated needs. The Product Design engineer will work with sales and customer personnel to determine product specifications. The Detroit Product Design Engineer will create preliminary designs and refine them to improve product quality and minimize costs.

- The Detroit Product Design Engineer will work with internal personnel as well as customer personnel to understand the specifications and purpose of proposed products. Based on this information, the Product Design Engineer will develop designs and eventually prototypes before bringing the product to launch.
- Create product designs utilizing design for manufacturing principles.
- Receive verbal or written instructions from customers or internal staff, and develop workable design concepts from these instructions.
- The Detroit Product Design Engineer will develop two and three dimensional design files and keep record of each phase of the design.
- Interface with product staff and customers to identify shortcomings of designs, establish a satisfactory solution, and refine the design to incorporate the solution.
- Assist other engineers in evaluating their designs, and solicit advice from more senior engineers on designs.
- Interface with tooling and manufacturing personnel to develop proper tooling as the design is developed.
Product Design Engineer (Detroit Area) Job Requirements:
- A four year degree in the field of engineering from an accredited institution.
- At least two to four years of experience designing manufactured or assembled products.
- Five years of systems design experience.
- Strong problem solving skills, able to create solutions.
- Familiarity with standard business applications such as Word, Excel, powerpoint.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling software, particularly solidworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Understanding of injection molding, tooling methods, and material selection.
- Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies.
- Able to succeed and thrive in a team environment as well as individual projects.
