Chicago Mechanical Field Engineer Overview:
The Chicago Mechanical Field Engineer is the primary route of communication between customers and the company’s engineering department. The Mechanical Field Engineer will work with customers at their facilities, inspect equipment, conducts training classes, answers the engineering help desk phones, and visits trade association meetings in and outside of Chicago, Illinois.

- The Mechanical Field Engineer must answer and resolve inquiries to the Engineering Help Desk phone. Ensure that calls are resolved. Perform field investigations as necessary. Design modified parts or develop repair systems to fix defects or other problems as necessary. Perform Root Cause analysis as necessary.
- Begin, oversee, and close special projects, either independently or as a team leader at the Chicago plant. Learn assigned component systems in order to become a customer.
- Create a course plan to teach training classes outside of Chicago on railroads to company personnel and customers.
- The Mechanical Field Engineer will maintain detailed knowledge of company’s equipment. Lead field inspections in order to evaluate the operation and performance capabilities of pieces of equipment. Identify and document important details so that corrective actions can be decided upon and be performed.
- Create a set of procedures to work toward a zero-defect/deficiency culture. Make recommendations to those procedures in order to improve them once established.
- The Mechanical Field Engineer will work with customers to understand every aspect of their problems. Identify larger problems of a greater scope and document all pertinent details. Forward information to concerned parties.
Mechanical Field Engineer (Chicago Area) Job Requirements:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering (Mechanical) is required for this job.
- A minimum of eight years of job experience or a higher level of education and training with a mix of job experience.
- Car building or other railroad experience is preferable but is not a suitable substitute for an Engineering degree.
- Demonstrated capacity to read, understand, and interpret journals of a technical or scientific nature, financial reports, legal documents, field manuals, standards and practices manuals, and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to field customer complaints or questions, regulatory inquiries, or other such queries. Able to prepare presentations or articles within a certain format.
- Exceptional math and engineering skills. Demonstrated ability to perform stress and rain calculations, strength tests, and other analyses.
- Good problem solving and reasoning skills.
- Demonstrated capacity to interpret technical instructions to handle abstract and concrete variables.
- Proficiency in Spanish or French is a plus for this job.
