Birmingham Materials Manager Overview:
The Birmingham Materials Manager will ensure that inventory levels at the facility are kept at acceptable levels without creating surplus. The Materials Manager will direct a staff of buyers and will provide feedback or direction as necessary. The Materials Manager will ensure all buyers are adequately trained and familiar with all company purchasing policies. The Materials Manager shall analyze purchasing information to identify areas where costs could be saved.

- The Birmingham, Alabama Materials Manager will enter orders to ensure the facility maintains appropriate inventory levels.
- Negotiate terms with suppliers in order to minimize excess costs.
- Interface with plant quality staff and supplier quality to ensure that purchased materials meet all necessary requirements.
- The Birmingham, Alabama Materials Manager will direct a staff of several buyers and junior buyers.
- Provide instruction, coaching, and mentorship to all direct reports.
- Establish and revise purchasing guidelines as appropriate, with management approval.
- The Birmingham, Alabama Materials manager will be responsible for ensuring that all purchasing department functions comply with internal and external regulations.
- Perform market research to find alternative suppliers in order to better negotiate and select suppliers.
- Take part in the hiring process for buyers.

Materials Manager (Birmingham Area) Job Requirements:
- A four year degree in business, supply chain, or a related area from an accredited university.
- At least eight years of purchasing experience.
- At least three years of management experience.
- Familiar with automotive supplier purchasing.
- Exceptional negotiation skills, proven history of cost savings.
- Strong mathematical reasoning skills.
- Great written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiar with SAP systems.
- Able to lead and motivate a team.
- Familiar with purchasing regulations and guidelines.
- Comfortable utilizing Microsoft office suite, particularly excel, word, and outlook.
- A high level of personal motivation.
- Familiar with automotive sourcing strategies.
- Having a network within automotive purchasing and sales would be strongly beneficial for this position.
